Do your children have any idea where money comes from? Hi, I'm Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries. When my son Joshua was a toddler, he used to think we could order money at McDonald’s along with our french fries and hamburgers. After all, he’d seen me drive up to the ATM machine when I needed a little cash, so why couldn’t I order some money for that toy he wanted. Here are some things we tried to help our kids understand how money is earned and spent. First, bring home a paycheck in cash. Then divide the money into categories and put it in envelopes to show where the money goes each month. For example, pull out 10% to give back to God. Then create envelopes for monthly expenses such as the house payment, groceries, and the power bill. My kids are always surprised to see how little is left each month and they seem to better understand how much it takes to provide for our family.
