Heavy Suitcases of Expectations

Did you bring any baggage into your marriage? Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Most of us enter marriage with a long list of expectations. Imagine if each of our expectations was a suitcase. There’s one suitcase labeled “make me happy.” Another called “do things my way.” And another labeled “be romantic.”

Some expectations are met, but many aren’t. And we end up feeling disappointed. What we anticipated as a lifetime journey hardly gets started because we’re worn out from unpacking! So what do we do with this load? We need to let go of it for good! In the Bible, Jesus invites us to give him our heavy loads. He says, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus invites us to put down our suitcases, and pick up only the load He gives us. As we do this, our marriages will become a blessing instead of a burden and we’ll discover the joy, peace, and intimacy God planned for marriage.
