Taming My Tongue

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve regretted something I said, I’d be rich! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

In the Bible, James said that “no man (or woman) can tame the tongue.” So, I guess he struggled with mastering that little pink thing inside his mouth, too. That made me feel so much better the other day when I was mean to my son and kinda rude to my husband. I realized I need to stop and ask God help me think before I speak. You know the good thing is, God also gave us tongues to say kind things – with a gentle tone and patient attitude.

I don’t know about you, but I need to ask God every morning to help me control the words that come out of my mouth. I want to use them for good – and say things that build up my family and other people around. Maybe we can share ideas on how to work on this together. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Affair-Proof Your Mind

As a person thinks, so they eventually act. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

A few years ago I watched a friend get tangled up in an emotional affair.

She loved her family but the attraction to this other man seemed unavoidable. In a moment of desperation and fear, she confided in me what was going on.

I found myself being challenged by the realization of how subtly It starts off- a comment, a conversation, a glance or one of a thousand other interactions that seem innocent yet aren’t.

God doesn’t say walk away from sexual immorality. No, He says to flee as if your very life is at stake! We are all just a few poor choices away from doing things we never thought we would.

How Do You Do It All?

How do you do it all? Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries, and I DON’T do it all!

The other day a friend asked me, Renee, with two teenage boys, an three year old with special needs, and a busy job, how do you do it all …I quickly told her / I don’t do it all – at least not all at the same time.

I always have more projects on my list than I can ever finish. And, Im terrible at estimating how much time it will take to get something done. But there are things I do that help me balance my life.

First, I depend on a list to remind me what needs to get done. Second, I try to delegate as much as I can to my kids and share the load with my husband.

Finally, I give myself a lot of grace! I have to be ok with NOT getting everything done every day. So, that’s how I do… or actually DONT DO - it all!

And I Thought There Was No Good

If you’d told me 10 years ago that God would bring good out of my weight issues and food struggles, I would have seriously doubted you. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

When you feel so defeated from years of trying and failing, you don’t want to hear, “eventually good will come from this.”

I could’ve cared less about some elusive, eventual good. My jeans didn’t fit and I couldn’t stay committed to a healthy eating plan to save my life. I saw no hope in sight.

We all have our struggles don’t we? We all fall short in some way. And, we all need to know more about this “good” mentioned in the Bible.

It’s true. God works for the good… in all things…even our seemingly impossible things… but, the good might be hard to see for a while, especially when it’s working out His way instead of our way. In The Valley

He took two deep breaths and was gone. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

When my father’s life ended, my family began to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We’d had been through some hard stuff over the months leading up to then, too. During my father’s last days, my newborn nephew had emergency surgery. Our 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a severe speech disorder, and soon after my mom had a pulmonary embolism that led to three days in ICU.

And you know what I found out? God keeps His promises. His goodness and mercy followed us, His words in the Bible guided us, and His presence comforted us.
Whatever you’re going through, Your Heavenly Father wants to meet you in your valley! To rush to your side and comfort your hurts, giving you courage to let go and perseverance to hold on – to Him and to others in your life.

Chargrilled Biscuits

You know that smell of burnt popcorn in the microwave? Worst smell ever, right? Wrong! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

A biscuit wrapped in foil cooked until the inside of the microwave literally melts away- that’s the worst smell ever!

The melted-microwave-chargrilled-biscuit smell was the result of my son deciding his biscuit should cook for a good long time.

Two thoughts started battling for what would happen next. Thought number one: Pitch a justifiable hissy fit. Thought number two: Remember you need grace so you should give grace.

I felt like reacting out of thought number 1. But, somehow, I made the conscious choice to let thought number 2 reign me in.

My son learned how difficult it is to rid a house of horrific smells and I learned I actually do have the capacity and the ability to pause and allow space for grace in my heart. For more visit Proverbs 31 Ministries at Proverbs31.org.

How Do I Respond?

How does God want me to respond when someone makes me mad? Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries. PE

I once read about a city that was divided by a big wall. People on both sides hated those who lived on the opposite side. One night they decided to gather all the trash they could find on their side and threw it over the wall - leaving a mound of garbage for their neighbors to wake up to.

The next morning the recipients of the garbage held a meeting and devised a plan. That night they gathered beautiful things and threw them over the wall. Flowers and anything beautiful they could find were piled in a heap on the other side. And above the mound of beautiful things they hung a note that said: "Each man gives what he has.”

So, what can we give in return when someone offends us? Do we throw an insult their way or offer something beautiful like a compliment.

One or Two Verse Day

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you sit down to read your Bible? There’s so much there, where do we start? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

It’s tough, but the best time for me to spend time reading is in the morning. I gather up my Bible and my computer, and pull myself away from my bed. Sometimes the urge to crawl back under the covers almost takes over, but I try to see the Bible as my love letter from God.

Recently I haven’t been reading chapters at a time. Some days it’s just one verse. One verse that I savor, letting it sink deep…interrupting me, rearranging me, redirecting me.

Through His love letter, God reminds me to pause. Pause to serve, give, encourage. Pause…to say thank you.

Processing The Pain Of Our Past

It was in the past and I wanted to leave it there. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Although I knew God wanted me to talk with Him about hurts I’d buried in my heart, I didn’t want to. I was tired of hurting and afraid I’d fall apart if I let it surface.

But I learned that when I ignore past hurts, often the pain from my yesterdays can damage relationships today.

When I got married 18 years ago, I had a lot of hurt from my parents’ divorce. Pain and disappointment Id’ never processed with my dad or with God. And all that hurt led to anger and unrealistic expectations towards my husband – I wanted him to be the perfect dad.

You know… we can’t go back and erase things that hurt us, but we can’t ignore them either. Instead, let’s process our pain with God, and ask Him to heal hurts from our yesterdays so they don’t negatively affect our tomorrows. For more, visit Proverbs 31.org.

Three Things Wife

Early in my marriage, I was determined to become a “good” wife. But, I wasn’t really sure what that meant! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Desperate to get it right, I tried to figure out exactly what it is that good wives do:

They cook meatloaf. They vacuum every day. They watch football.

The list in my head of what a good wife does grew until it completely overwhelmed me.
Finally, I told my husband, “I just can’t do everything good wives do. Tell me three things you’d like me to focus on and I’ll try to do those well.”

His 3 things were simple… Be emotionally and spiritually invested in our kids, take good care of your body and soul, and keep the house tidy. (Notice he said tidy - not perfectly clean.)

Of course I don’t limit myself to these three but understanding what matters most to my husband has certainly freed me to enjoy my marriage so much more.

The Gift Giver

I can’t wait to watch my family open their gifts from me on Christmas morning! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I love to see their faces light up with surprise and a sense of knowing they’re loved. I bet that’s how God feels when we enjoy the gifts He’s given us. Christmas is the perfect time to remember some of the gifts He’s given to me.

He’s given me peace: Jesus said, “My peace I give you.”

He’s given me physical life: The Bible says “God formed man from the dust and breathed into him the breath of life.”

He’s also given me eternal life: "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

And He’s given me rest: Jesus says, ‘Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ Now that’s a gift I can really use this time of year!

Do I Really See My Blessings?

I’m really not as thankful as I should be. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. I realize I need to model what I teach to my kids, so I’m trying to assess how thankful I really am.

Do I see the incredible spouse I married, or do I just grumble about his faults? Do I see the health of a son who can play sports as a good thing, or do I just grumble about his sweaty laundry? Do I see how fortunate we are to have enough food to eat, or do I just grumble about a kitchen that never stays clean?

I know I’ve been given so much. I’m also guilty of becoming so distracted by these gifts that I forget to be thankful for them. Finding Contentment

Doesn’t it seem like the more we buy for our kids, the less thankful they are? Hi, I'm Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Psychologists say that a constant supply of gifts can create a sense of entitlement in children, causing them to focus on what's coming next, rather than on what they already own.

The Bible calls this discontentment - never being satisfied, no matter how much we have. So, how do we help our kids learn to be content?

First, we can help them enjoy what they already have by reading books with them; playing board games and talking walks with them while they rollerblade or skateboard in the neighborhood. We can also find ways as a family to help others who are less fortunate.

And finally, we can make it a regular habit to talk as a family about what we're thankful for, not just at Thanksgiving. Picking Up A Runaway

My friend picked up a runaway teen the other day and took her back home. And, I’m not sure I’d do that! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. A young girl with muddy bare feet walked in front of my friend’s car when she was stopped at an intersection.

So, she turned around, picked her up and drove her home. The teenager was skipping school and leaving home because she got into an argument with her parents.

She felt betrayed, lonely, tired, and misunderstood. And, my prayer for her is that she will know that she truly is loved.

You know, this young teen isn’t much different from you and me. Most of us have found ourselves running away at some point in our lives. Running, but desperately hoping to be found.

Surrendering

This morning, I couldn't sleep! My mind was too busy figuring out what I had to do today, this week, and this month! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I woke up feeling like I needed to hand over all my thoughts and plans to God. I had so many decisions to make and changes to figure out. There was no way I could do it all. And I felt like God was telling me to ask for His help.

So what exactly does that look like? For me, handing things over, or surrendering, happens when I empty my thoughts and my heart of all that I’m carrying, and let go of everything I want or think that I need.Surrender is never easy for me because I’m afraid to let go. But I can’t figure out why I try to hold onto things I can’t change or control!

If Only You Knew

Sometimes I know God wants more of me but I’m not always sure how to give it to Him. Hi, I'm Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I used to wonder how I could give anything to God. Then I read a story in the Bible about a woman who went to a well to get water. Jesus was there and asked her to give Him a drink. She asked how she could give Him anything since they were from different regions that hated each other. Jesus replied…If only you knew…

He said that if only she knew who she was talking to, and what offered her – she’d ask Him and He would supply the very thing He was asking for - He’d give her living water.

That showed me that when God asks for my heart, my hopes, my plans – I simply need to remember who’s asking me and respond by asking HIM to give me – His heart, His hopes, His plans. He only asks us to give what He is willing to supply. For more encouragement, visit proverbs31.org.

His Way

The other day my husband joked that he thought I was a little “hormonal.” And, I didn’t really appreciate it at the time! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. I was having one of those weeks. Ever had one of those?

I had let my frustration level mount to the point where everything was bothering me. It had been a week packed with deadlines, appointments for the kids, and getting ready for my sister to come for a visit.

There are many ways I can choose to react when I’m stressed out. I can say "it's my right to be frustrated," or, I can choose to let God teach me His way in that moment. His way leads me to look at an annoying situation and say, “You know if this is the worst thing that happens to me today, it’s still a really great day.” And what a perspective change that can be for this sometimes very hormonal woman!

Believing God

How would today be different if I really BELIEVED God? Hi, I'm Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Sometimes my emotional ups and downs make we wonder if I really believe God’s promises in the Bible. I know I believe in Him, but do I BELIEVE HIM?

If I actively BELIEVE God today, then I’ll trust He’s working all things out for good - even though big expenses have drained our savings account and our air conditioner just broke.

If I BELIEVE God today, I won’t be anxious when little inconveniences get in my way. Instead I’ll turn to Him for peace and I’ll thank Him in advance for helping me accomplish what has to be done.

If I truly BELIEVE God, then I’ll go to bed on time tonight, because God doesn’t want me to stay up late working. The Bible says He wants to give me the gift of rest.

Do You Like Yourself?

Do you like yourself? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

It’s a really awkward question don’t you agree? But isn’t it so easy for us to pick ourselves apart and focus on those things that are not very appealing? When we do this we become hyper self-focused and take our eyes off of Jesus and His plans for us.

We can sometimes spend years trying to hide or fix what we think are personal flaws. But, wouldn’t our time be better spent learning how to make peace with who we are so those feelings of insecurity don’t become a distraction to how we live?

Jesus wants us to see ourselves as a package of unique qualities that He sees as necessary for the life He wants us to live. Yes, we might still feel insecure at times but, Jesus can take everything we give over to Him and turn it around for His good purposes.

Oh The Portions!

It’s been a crazy day! With dozens of errands and work projects I feel like I am living on the go.

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

In the midst of my hurries, I forgot my healthy lunch at home so I had to eat out. So, I decided to order the SMALL combo to at least attempt “healthy.” Well, when I got my order they gave me a HUGE drink that would have been considered a large soda a few years ago. I asked to make sure and the lady helping me said, "Oh, yeah, that's a small. Our medium and large are a LOT bigger than that!"

I can't BELIEVE how large the drinks and food servings are these days. And then we wonder why we all struggle with our weight! It's crazy!!! I did make at least ONE wise dietary choice, though. I threw away half the fries!

How Difficulties Affect Us

Just because we want to live for God doesn’t mean we won’t face difficult times. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The difference being a Christian should make is in how difficulties affect us or how we react to them. Even when life gets cloudy and uncertain we have an anchor of truth for our souls through prayer and reading the Bible. I don’t say this as the trite Christian answer. I know that God’s truth really helps!

The Bible says that people who follow God’s words are like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came, the waters rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it didn’t fall, because its foundation was built on the rock!

The rock in this story is God’s truth. It’s during hard times that reading God’s words AND following them will give us peace and security! For more encouragement visit Proverbs 31.org.

Feeling Old

Exactly how did THIS birthday get here SO fast?! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries. A friend of mine just had her last birthday in her 30’s and is freaking out a little.

She told me there’re so many things she’d always want to do before she turns 40. Visit the Grand Canyon, learn Spanish, lose those extra pounds. And, now she’s realizing that she only has ONE YEAR to do these things before the big 4-0.

Of course my friend realizes she’s already accomplished a lot and God’s given her so much. But, I think the knowledge of how quickly the years are passing has caused her to panic a little.

It’s so easy to get caught up in feeling OLD, isn’t it? And, there’ll always be things we want to do but just haven’t got around to. There are days I struggle with it too. How about you?

Memories Of My Typewriter

Want to keep your kids engaged in what you’re saying? Tie it to a story from your life. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. Once my dad brought home a typewriter that I would sit at for hours typing word after word. I shared this with my kids recently and told them how this was an important clue God used in my life to eventually reveal His purpose for me. I became a writer. Like the Bible says “God had a plan for me.”

My kids loved that story and remained engaged in our discussion about what plans God might have for their lives. I think that’s why Jesus taught with stories. While it may be difficult for a child to recall a passage they just read in the Bible, most can specifically recall the details of a story.

I Want To Be Here And There

Ever wish you could be in lots of places at once? Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Last week I couldn’t stop thinking about everywhere I wanted and felt like I needed to be! I was packing to go spend the weekend with a friend who's going through a terrible marriage break-up. I really wanted to go but there were also so many things that made me want to stay home.

My in-laws were coming to town for a visit. My friend Kim called to tell me her tumors had grown and that they’d found new ones. I wanted to drop everything to go be with her. And my kids had started asking why I was leaving.It’s so hard to want to be in several places at once, doing things that really matter. Rest

I know taking time to rest is essential but life doesn’t always cooperate. Hi I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. Life is busy. Schedules are jam packed. So many things feel absolutely essential. But are they really?

I’ve been feeling challenged lately to rest more. Not just getting more sleep but having a more restful, peaceful attitude throughout my day. I just found I had gotten into this habit of rushing everywhere I went. I rush to the store. I rush to get my kids from school. Then I rush them to get their homework done, get through dinner, and finally rush to get them in bed.

Why all the hurry? Maybe I need to cut some things from our schedule? And really do it this time… Wanna join me? How have you found ways to make rest a priority?

Bring It To Me

Sometimes I just want to shout, “I can’t DO THIS!”

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The other day my friend’s son called out to her, “Mom, I can't do this!" He was working on his math in the den and she was in the kitchen washing dishes. So she told him, “If you can't do it just bring it to me."Right then, she thought, isn’t that how God responds to me when I’m overwhelmed?

He says, "If you can't do it, just bring it to Me."When I’m hurting, again God says, "If you can't do it, just bring it to Me."And when I’m confused? "If you can't do it, just bring it to Me."What a great reminder, huh? When I think I can't do something, I can bring it to God. I can take what little I can do and put it in His hands. Then I can watch Him take my meager efforts and turn them into something He can do.

Become A Good Delegator

When I start to feel like I can’t get everything done in my daily routine, it’s time to take an honest assessment. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. I divide my tasks into three categories: Stuff only I can do, Stuff someone else can do under my guidance, and Stuff I can hand off to someone else.

Knowing the difference between these three categories has been life-transforming for me. There are lots of household chores my children are perfectly capable of handling so I don’t hesitate to get their help.

Sometimes I just have to honestly ask myself: Are there things in my life that can be delegated to others? Am I willing to ask for help? Do I need to look outside my home for someone who can help?

And, I always try to remember to pray about a creative solution when I’m looking for some relief. For more visit Proverbs31.org.

Trust Him

When God asks me to do things I don't understand, I have to decide if I’m going to trust Him or question Him.

Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries

Sometimes God asks us to do things that seem unnecessary, or crazy. Like the time in the Bible when Jesus was asked to pay a tax and He responded by telling Peter to go catch a fish.

Miraculously, the exact amount needed for the tax was found in the mouth of the fish Peter caught. Now, Peter had a moment where he had to decide to accept Jesus' instructions or question them. Jesus could’ve produced the money in many different ways, but He wanted Peter to be involved.

So, when there’s something God’s asking me to do that doesn't make sense…the choice is mine. Ignore Him or trust Him.

Emotional Stability In Our Kids

Whether they realize it or not, our children are looking to us for their emotional security. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

If we blur the rules based on a child’s emotional responses we are like shifting sand – unstable and ineffective.

I know this. But in the midst of everyday life it’s so hard. Kids can wear down our resolve to stick with what we know is right.

So, I have to remind myself that it’s good for the parent to be the parent. I’m not supposed to be my kids’ buddy or entertainment director… I’m supposed to be an authority in their lives. Also, I have to give myself a break when I need it. I’m much more likely to give in to them when I’m worn out. Can I Have A Timeline?

Sometimes I wish God would give me a timeline! Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries!

Wouldn’t it be great to know that in one year, you’ll be here…five years from now you can expect this?

I don’t know about you, but for me the past several years have been filled with a lot of stuff I wasn’t prepared for. Some things were really hard, but there were also amazing moments like celebrating my mom being cancer-free and watching my first-born become a teenager.

I think God doesn’t give us a timeline is because He wants us to find purpose right where we are. In fact, the Bible says we should “number our days” so that we’ll gain a heart of wisdom.

So, yeah, I’ll always have lists and goals. But, I’m learning that my timeline will develop as I go along. I’ll ask God for wisdom and direction, but I won’t always know what’s coming -- and that’s okay!

Have You Given Up?

Have you ever resigned yourself to just not being able to do something? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I know I’ve done this way too often. With a simple, "I can't," I brush off a possibility without even thinking. This is when I need to remind myself of something I used to think I couldn’t do, but now I can, like running.

Four years ago I forced myself to exercise and started running, but I use that word loosely. At first all I could do was slowly jog from one mailbox to the next on a country road by my home. But eventually, I was able to run further and further without crying and feeling like my lungs were on fire. It's still an effort and there are still days I don't want to do it. But I love how I feel afterwards. And, believe me; if I can get to this point…anything’s possible with God’s help!For more encouragement, visit proverbs 31.org.

It can be so hard to come up with a creative gift idea for the kids in my life. Hi, I'm Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I was hoping to find some new ideas for Christmas and came across an idea in the book “Homespun Gifts from the Heart.” I read about giving a Christmas Book Basket. I know…most kids don't jump up and down at the idea of getting a book for Christmas; but that's where a little creativity comes in handy.

The idea was to create a gift basket based entirely around the theme of a book. For instance, if a child likes Winnie the Pooh: Pick out a favorite Pooh book, then add a stuffed pooh, some honey, a box of biscuit mix, and a bag a candy. Nestle the gifts in a basket lined with red gingham napkins - and you have a great gift. Who wouldn't love an afternoon filled with hot biscuits, sticky honey, and Winnie the Pooh?

Let's Dangle Our Feet Today

Have you ever been listening to a song when the words jump out, and say "listen to me right now?!" Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. That happened to me yesterday. I was in the middle of listening to a song about rest. I’m not opposed to rest. But life can be busy, you know?

Hello deadlines. Hello school work. Hello empty fridge and dirty laundry.

So I’m singing this song about rest by Anita Renfroe and this phrase comes along: "dangling my feet off the edge of nowhere.” I don’t think I do that. Rest for me is scheduled and on purpose. Letting whimsy into my world isn’t something I’m good at.

But the words about dangling my feet grabbed me. So, I've decided to CHOOSE to walk without pretense or hurry today. I will try to slow down. I will try to live in the moment. Just for today. For more proverbs31.org.

One thing I love at Christmas time is a cup of hot cocoa. Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Here’s one way the word ‘COCOA’ can help us remember some important aspects of Christmas.

●C is for CHRIST. He’s the reason for Christmas!
●O is for ORNAMENTS. As we decorate our tree, let’s remember to decorate our hearts and homes with God’s love.
●C reminds us to CELEBRATE. It’s easy to get focused on giving, but let’s not forget to celebrate all that God has given us!
●O is for OVERJOYED! Instead of getting overwhelmed with our schedules, let’s get overjoyed by remembering why Jesus was born.
●And A is for ABUNDANCE! In the abundance of presents and people, let’s remember that what we really need is the abundant life Jesus promised through a relationship with Him.

For me, today will consist of laundry, homework, and a to-do list for Christmas that’s never-ending. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries and, like you, I've come to the realization that Christmas is coming in fast motion.

And it’s so easy to let myself get all in a tizzy and start steam rolling ahead determined to get everything perfectly checked off my list. But because of those unrealistic expectations I put on myself each year, tensions always run high, finances get tight, and my emotions usually flow more than I’d like.

Feeling Bullied

Sometimes I feel like I am being bullied by my own thoughts! Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries!

I don’t know about you, but there’s one thought that tends to creep in and act like my own private bully! He always shows up when I have tons of things to do and have to do all of them at the same time and it’s gonna be a huge challenge. Or when I get tired or discouraged; that is when he starts bullying me.

He doesn’t say it out loud, but I hear it, and if I’m not careful, I believe it. He tells me a very simple, very subtle lie.

“You are what you do. If you fail in this, then that’s who you are.”

Funny thing is, I don’t hear that when I succeed. And it would be a lie if I did. The truth is, I am not what I do. I’m not a success because I get it all done. I’m not a failure when I don’t! And neither are you!

Dealing With The Past

Let’s face it; dealing with the junk from our past can be tough. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I spent a lot of years living in a huge rut because of some difficult circumstances in my life. But nothing good grows in a rut. It just stays muddy and worn out.

So, eventually, I had to make the choice to face each situation and stop asking, “Why me?” Instead, I have to make myself say…now that this is my reality, God, what good can come from it?

And good has come despite the abandonment, abuse, loss, and rejection. I have found peace. I have a story that gives hope to others in tough circumstances that they can get out of the ruts that they’re stuck in. I can see that now and it really helps my trust in Him grow. A Picture of Grace

I just read a story that painted a perfect picture of God’s grace.

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

A three year old was watching two older girls playing with helium filled balloons. She told her mom she wanted one too. Without skipping a beat, one of the older girls said, “Here, have mine.”

The pre-schooler’s mom told her to say thank you and to hold on tight. Well, being three, she struggled with that last part and, before long she screamed, “My BALLOON!!” as it floated away.

Before the little girl even had a chance to start crying, the other older girl came right over with her balloon and said, “Here you go!”

What a picture of GRACE! Just like those girls, God gives us a gift. Being human, we mess it up, lose it, or chase it away. But, God comes right back with a second chance to receive the gift He has for us!

A Mom's Fear

Are you ever afraid that something’s happening to one of your children? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

For moms, this is our greatest fear. We see our teenage son drive down the driveway and fear grabs our heart. We hear of another child getting diagnosed with cancer and we start asking the what if questions. We watch the news reports on a child that’s been abducted and we hold ours just a little tighter that night.

Having 5 children, I often want to just tuck my kids under my wing and never let them leave my side. But I also know that’s not how God wants me to handle my fears. So, I pray. I read God’s truths. I memorize God’s promises. And I make the choice to walk in confidence. The minute those fears start to creep in and haunt my heart, I have to start the process all over again. A Favorite Gift

My mom was about to retire and I wanted to honor her in a really special way! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I decided to plan a surprise party and create a book of memories for my mom, spanning 65 years of her life. Before the party, I asked family members and friends to send me a written memory along with a favorite photo. After she recovered from the big surprise I gave the album to my mom and I’ll never forget the look on her face or the tears in her eyes. She felt so loved!

That album is one of her most treasured possessions now, because it captures the many facets of her life as a mom, sister, grandma, and friend!

Ya know, making a memory album is a great way to show someone how valuable their life is and how much you love them! It takes extra time but it’s always a great gift.

Just Jump

“I’ll catch you. Just jump!” Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. I have to smile when I remember the game my husband played with our girls when they were little. They would stand on the end of our very tall bed and when Art gave the nod, they would jump to him confident that he would catch them every time.

But they didn’t start out confident. Their first time jumping was nothing but a leap of faith. Art would assure them repeatedly, “I’ll catch you. Just jump sweetheart. I’ll be here.” Eventually, they took the leap. And Daddy was there to catch them every time.

I think that’s the way it is with taking spiritual leaps of faith as well. What’s God been calling you to the edge of lately? Have you heard Him assure you that He’ll be right there? Simple Holiday Parties

Every year I say I want to host a holiday party but I usually don’t because it’s too much work!

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

This year, I’m going to sop talking about it and actually do it! But I don’t want to stress out about having a few friends over. So, I got a few ideas from some people who really know how to throw a party without all the stress. In the book Homespun Memories for the Heart I found over 200 ideas for creating unforgettable moments and simple holiday settings. Some of my favorite ideas were to

● Decorate with cozy things you already have in your home.
● Play soft music in the background to set the mood.
● Light candles for a soft, warm glow
● And Keep the menu simple.

Christmas Attitude

How will my Christmas attitude be this year? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Many things used to make me have a bad Christmas attitude but not this year. “It is what it is.” That’s my new motto for the season.

For me to pretend that shopping, decorating, and digging through the attic makes me happy, happy, happy, would be fake, fake, fake. I’ll be honest I don’t like all the extra things Christmas adds to my to do list but I love what the season can be.

The main thing is I love Jesus and I love my family and it’s okay if everything doesn’t get done perfectly. It is what it is and that has helped me turn my Christmas Ugggh into a Christmas Ahhhhh! Why Wait?

I’m grieving the loss of a friend and it’s really hard. Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My friend, Kim, was a wonderful mom with three young children who’ll feel the pain of their loss for the rest of their lives. Her death has caused me to ask some tough questions about my own life. Although I know I’ll die someday, I tend to live like I have forever. But I don’t.

So, I’ve been wondering… what’re some things I’d want to do if I were diagnosed with a terminal illness? Would I write letters to my husband and kids telling them how I feel about them? Or make videos for their graduation or wedding days? Would I just want to spend every moment with them that I possibly could?

It’s easy not to think about these things when I don’t have a life-threatening illness. But, why wait? There’s so much I want to say and do, and, the reality is, I’m not guaranteed tomorrow.

Totally Grumpy

Yesterday I acted really ugly. I was impatient. Rushed. And totally grumpy. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My daughter needed new athletic shoes so off we trotted to our local shoe store. It should have been a wonderful bonding time but instead I quickly found myself being snappy and frustrated. I was caught off guard with the high price tag of the shoes, and things just went down hill from there.

Seeing this situation as a gift for which to be thankful never entered my mind. Seeing my daughter as a gift for which to be thankful never entered my mind. Seeing the fact that she is healthy and able to be involved in athletic activities never entered my mind. It wasn’t wrong for me to feel frustrated. But my response could have and should have been different.

Park Your Mind

I can have such a runaway mind when I focus on my fears and blow them way out of proportion. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Do you ever struggle with this? Throughout the Bible God instructs us to park our minds on what is true.

Recently my friend, Holly heard me talk about parking your mind on God's truths and decided to write some of our favorite Scripture verses on her back door. So, each morning when I arrive for our daily run I am greeted with huge bold letters, "Park Your Mind" written across her door in permanent marker. Many different Scriptures are colorfully written all over the door reminding us of God's power and presence.

Try Something New

You know I’m always telling my kids to be willing to try new things. But, maybe I need to be a little more open myself! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Recently I spent a weekend with some friends who are on this crazy kick of eating only all-natural, healthy food. When we woke up the first morning, they informed me that we would not be drinking coffee; we would be drinking hot herbal tea. My caffeine-addicted body screamed – what?

I was searching for danishes and donuts when they announced we’d be eating poached eggs. I’d never eaten one of those! And in case you don’t know what that is - basically it’s a steamed egg. I wrinkled my nose and voiced my complaints but then I heard my own mommy voice say, “Don’t be afraid to try something new. “

And you know what; I’m now an official fan of poached eggs! But, I have to say I still enjoy my morning cup of coffee!

I’ve been bombarded recently with the stark reality of people's fears coming to pass. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I have a friend dying of brain cancer. I have another friend who is nearing retirement and has been swindled out of his entire life savings. I’ve read three blogs recently that have told the tragic story of losing children. My heart breaks over these losses. Maybe you’re in a season of loss right now. I can remember going through loss and being SO angry.

Over time I’ve learned that God Himself comes to us personally when we’re afraid or grieving. Even when we can't process what life throws at us, we can know that God stays with us in our grief. He never leaves no matter how messy our grief gets. Somehow just knowing that helps me.

Making Adjustments

Our family’s getting ready for a huge life change and I’m so excited but…also a little overwhelmed! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

As we get ready to adopt a little girl from Ethiopia I have to admit there are times when I have doubts about how things will work out. My schedule’s already really FULL with taking care of my family, working, and other commitments.

Adopting a baby means one more person who’ll need my time and attention. Of course I can’t wait to give it to her! But I have wondered what my life will look like once she’s here.

Do you ever feel like that? Has God brought new commitments into your life that require major adjustments to your schedule? I’m right there with you. I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen. But, I’m so glad that I do know that God is real and waiting for me to ask for His help!

Trust Was The Word Of The Day

Last week I was up most of the night with a very sick child. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My daughter Ashley was supposed to be competing in a State Gymnastics Meet the next day. I know in the grand scheme of life, skipping the Meet pales in comparison to many more serious matters. But, to her this was a really big deal. One that she had worked SO hard to prepare for. And now her body was too weak to attend.

So trust was the word of the day. But sometimes trust is HARD. Especially when it means taking a completely different route than what we were expecting.

Are you going through some tough times right now? Are you full of questions but short on answers? Maybe we’re just supposed to say, “God I don’t like this and I don’t understand but still I trust You and that’s enough.” For more encouragement visit Proverbs 31.org.

What Could I Be Missing?

I wonder if I ever miss out on something God wants to give me because I’m not in a place to receive it. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Recently I was trying to connect with my son’s teacher to give her a wedding gift before she moved away. No matter how hard we tried, something would go wrong and we’d miss each other. Finally, we decided to meet at her apartment on the day she was moving.

Well, when I got there, she was gone. I didn’t have her phone number with me, so I couldn’t call her. After waiting a while, I went home and found a message on our voicemail saying she’d gone to lunch and stayed longer than she’d planned.
It’s not that she didn’t want the gift - it’s just that she wasn’t in a place to receive it.

You know, I’m sure there are some gifts God wants to give me. Sometimes I just have to make sure my heart is in a place to receive them.

I Flirt With My Husband

I love to flirt with my husband. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Yes, I love to flirt with my man but that hasn’t always been the case. I wasted years being grumpy over what I wished was different about my marriage. Then one day I realized the more I focus on the negative the more negative I would wallow in. I decided to start intentionally looking for good- and that’s when I started flirting with my man again.

Recently Art and I were out to dinner with our 3 teenaged daughters.

I was telling my girls how I thought their Dad was so cute. Our 16 year old gagged and while the 15 and 12 year olds giggled.

And then Brooke boldly stated she was very thankful Art and I had gotten married. “Or I wouldn’t be here”, she proclaimed. “And that would be a complete tragedy.”

Parenting On My IKnees

I woke up at 2:15 this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My mind was tossing and turning with concerns and prayers for my son who's going through a hard time. It's all part of being the mom of a teenager. I’d prayed for him before he went to bed, asking God to be real to my son. I’d asked God to protect his heart and mind and to help us navigate this new parenting phase as our son becomes the man God created him to be. I fell asleep praying and woke up praying.

I know I can't talk my child out of how he's feeling. I can't give him a promise from the Bible and expect it to make him happy. I can't deny or figure out what he's going through. The best thing I can do is pray, and love him. And pray some more. I have a feeling I'm gonna be parenting on my knees a lot these next few years.

Eating Too Much

A lot of times our biggest struggle with food is that we simply eat too much of it.

Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Usually when we find ourselves overeating on a repeated basis, something else is at work. Many refer to it as a form of emotional emptiness.

I can remember times when spiritual and emotional emptiness left me vulnerable. Much of this emptiness stemmed back to coming home from school and being told, “Your daddy's gone.” Many life-struggles since then have left me feeling vulnerable and empty.

And when I couldn't figure out how to fill what my heart was lacking, food became a comfort.

I finally realized that overeating was adding to my hurt - not soothing the pain.
One by one I’ve gone to those memories and said, “Yes, this is a circumstance of my life, but it doesn’t define who I am.” And overeating only reaches my stomach but can’t ever fill my soul. For more visit Proverbs31.org.

A Friend's Permission

I got an email from a good friend this week, strongly encouraging me to take some time off from work to finish a project I’ve been trying to get to for months! Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Lysa knew I’d had a very stressful month. I'd been traveling a lot and just couldn’t keep up with life and family and work. She was concerned because she knew I was frustrated by the fact that I’d had to keep postponing this project.

It seemed like one unexpected need after the other just kept coming up. She also knew it would be hard for me to take time off work to do something I really “wanted” to do instead of something I “needed” to do.Ya know, sometimes we need a friend who’ll give us permission to do something for ourselves.

As soon as I read Lysa’s email I knew it was what I needed to do. It was permission from a friend and direction from God to take a break and do something I enjoy.

But I Don't Feel Gentle

I can perform random acts of gentleness. But, gentleness doesn’t ooze from the core of who I am. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. Can you relate to this?

This is especially true if I get stressed OR if I get sleepy. Something from the Bible that’s been really tugging at my heart lately is this: “Let your gentleness be evident to all.”

Yes, I want to be a gentle woman- even when things bump into my happy and make me feel anything but gentle.

I am capable of being gentle, I just have to intentionally practice it. And I can do this by practicing the another word from the same place in the Bible: Rejoice. The more my heart’s parked in a place of thanksgiving and rejoicing the less room I have for grumpiness.

She Smiles

When you think about all you have going on this week, do you have anything planned that makes you smile? Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The other day I was reading about the Proverbs 31 woman. Among all her great qualities, one thing I love is that that Bible says she “smiled at the days ahead.”

It made me wonder how I can make sure I have something to smile about in the midst of my busy week. It’s so easy to let my days get filled with tasks and my heart gets buried in busyness. I have to schedule time to stop all my running around and do something fun, sometime I can look forward to like shopping with friends, playing games with my kids, or going on a date with my husband.

So what do you enjoy doing that you haven’t done in a while? Is there something fun you can plan in the next few days that you will look forward to – something that will make you smile at the days ahead?

The War Against My Soul

For years, I refused to think of my eating struggles as anything more than just a physical issue. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. I didn’t pray about it. And I certainly didn’t ask God for help. I just mentally beat myself up over my lack of self-control.

My ever increasing waist line and poor food choices were wreaking havoc on my body and honestly also my soul. Being ruled by anything other than God isn’t healthy spiritually, mentally or physically.

For years I was overweight physically but underweight spiritually. Tying those two things together has finally allowed me to see why so many of my diet attempts failed - I needed to dig past the surface to the real heart and soul of my issues.

Yes, I want to get healthy. But my real goal isn’t a number on the scale- it’s peace.

From Doubt To Dependence

Do you ever doubt yourself with thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not smart enough?” Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I recently surveyed over 1200 women about their self-doubts. Ninety percent said they often think things like, “I can’t do that.” ”I’m not good enough,” or “I’m not gifted enough.”

I’ve definitely felt that way and I used to beg God to take away all my doubts but, so far, He hasn’t.

Over time I’ve realized that instead of taking them away God uses my self-doubts to help me depend more on Him. When doubt fills my thoughts, I start to feel stuck. The only thing that helps me get unstuck is when I turn to God for help. It helps me to be honest with Him about how I’m feeling. Then I look for verses in the Bible that give me confidence.

Struggling with doubt can lead us to depend on God to help us stop listening to self-critical thoughts and start listening to His thoughts instead.

Weak Places

Some days I wonder if I’ll ever get it all together. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Weak places. We all have them. Places that make us feel incapable and inadequate.

My weak places frustrate me. What’s your weak place? A money situation? A marriage issue? A temper that flares? An insecurity that stings? A family dysfunction? An ongoing issue with food?

Can I breathe a little life into your weakness today? We don’t have to have all the answers. It’s okay to be so tired of our weak places that we run out of words to pray.

Maybe we need to sit still for just a moment today, without trying to figure things out. We aren’t weak. We’re dependent. Dependent on the only One powerful enough to help us- God.

How do we decide what to say yes to and what to say no to? Hi, I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I’m convinced that one of the main reasons our lives get out of balance is because we have a hard time saying no. It just comes natural for us to be multi-taskers and people-pleasers. I don’t think I know any woman who doesn’t want to be there for everyone she knows whether at work, or church or friends. And I’m right there with her. I don’t wanna disappoint anybody. And for some reason I feel like I have to be it all and do it all.

But the truth is – I can’t. So, I’m learning to say no to a lot of requests for my time. That way I’ll have the energy and emotion I need to give to those closest to me. I know I’ll disappoint someone but I won’t be as likely to disappoint those I love most - which includes God and my family.

Self Control

Have you ever been in a discussion when suddenly your blood pressure skyrockets and the worst version of you begs to come out? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

It’s hard when someone else does things out of our control, yanking our emotions into a bad place. But I can decide whether or not to give them the power to control these emotions.

When I react by yelling or making a snappy comeback, I basically transfer my power to that other person. When I’m void of power, I’m void of self-control.

Now, when I say “my power,” I really mean God’s power working in me. When I react according to God’s truths, I feel that power. When I react in a way that’s contrary to His truths, I’m powerless.

More Than A Story

Sometimes I wonder if my kids think the Bible is just another storybook. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I had to smile and thank God one afternoon when He showed me that wasn’t the case. You see my son Joshua, who was eight at the time, told me he was writing a book. It was about a little boy who got stung by a jellyfish and was afraid to go back in the ocean. Josh said that night the boy read about David in the Bible and asked God to give him courage, and the next day he went swimming.

Joshua’s fourteen now and I pray all the time that God will keep showing him the Bible offers hope for everything we face. Just like the boy in his book, I pray my son will go to God and read His Words for courage when life stings. I pray he’ll know that the Bible isn’t just a collection of stories, but a collection of God’s promises and principles to guide us through life.

Embrace The Process

If I always expect my kids to make me feel good or look good, I’m setting all of us up to fail! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My children were never meant to carry the weight of a mama’s need for validation. I’ve got 5 amazing kids. And while I’ve done everything in my power to raise them well, there aren’t any guarantees.

We can raise terrific kids. And we can also raise kids that chase the wrong things their whole lives.

So, what’s a parent to do? Embrace the process. Learn from the process. Let God speak to us during the process. And see the process of raising kids as an ongoing opportunity to invest beyond ourselves.

God will use every step of this process for our good, but it won’t always make us feel or look good. However, it’s our only opportunity to reach into the generations to come and make a difference.

Just Enough Light

When I’m going through something really hard, I want God to show me how it’s all going to work out! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I realize that me seeing how God’s gonna take care of things ahead of time requires very little faith, but that’s just how I feel sometimes. Like recently we’ve sensed God leading our family to adopt a baby from Ethiopia. We’re so excited but I’ve also been concerned about all the changes this will bring. I haven’t had a baby in a really long time!

The other day I was telling my husband about my worries and how I want God to show me how all the pieces are gonna fall together. JJ reminded me that sometimes God gives us just enough light for the step we’re on. When we take that step, He gives us light for the next step, and then the next.

A Little Goes A Long Way

I love to start my day with a 30-minute jog. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Some mornings, I don’t have 30 minutes to spare so I don’t go running. I figure if I can’t jog for 30 minutes, I might as well not go at all. Well, yesterday I didn’t run and by 3 o’clock I had a headache and felt terrible. I only had 15 minutes left before my kids got home from school, but I knew the exercise would make me feel better. So I went running even though I only had a little bit of time.

Afterwards, I felt great! That little bit went a long way.

Ya know, the same thing happens when it comes to reading my Bible. Some mornings I only have a little bit of time so I decide to wait until later. But, by the afternoon I can really feel the difference in my attitude and emotions.

Now I realize that no matter how little time I have, I need to use it! Because a little goes a long way!

The Formula

I’ve learned I can’t build my identity as a parent on the fragile choices of my kids. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

When I was a young mom, I was desperate for a formula I could plug my family into that would yield great kids.

I spent the first 5 years of motherhood convinced I was messing my kids up beyond repair. I now have kids ranging in ages from 23 to 12 and I’ve finally learned there is no perfect parenting formula.

We weren’t made to follow formulas. We were made to follow Jesus.
This is true with every aspect of our lives. We were made to follow Jesus’ lead in our marriages, our jobs, our churches, our friendships, our everything.

I’ve learned to humbly acknowledge how much I don’t know about life and readily admit how much I need Jesus. In every way.

Conflict Resolution

Just yesterday I was knee deep in some conflicts that made me want to rip my hair out by the roots. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Many of us want to avoid conflict with all our might. Conflict is messy, emotional, and exhausting.

The rational part of my brain sees situations one way but the emotional part of my heart sees them differently. We can get all caught up in the emotion and make things a much bigger deal than necessary or we can ask Jesus for a better perspective.
I’ve learned that feelings should be indicators not dictators. They can indicate there are some emotions to process but not dictate how we act or react in a situation.

Thinking this way helps me cut through the emotion and focus on a solution.
No tangled feelings. No big issue. Just a good solution without the added stress of escalated emotions.

How Can I Do It All?

If you ever figure out how to get everything done…Please tell me your secret! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Sometimes my life is more than I can manage. It’s usually because I’ve overcommitted or expected too much of myself and I’ll start feeling like I can’t keep up with everyone or everything!

Do you ever feel like that?

Recently I decided to slow down and apply something I’ve read in the Bible about acknowledging God in all my ways. Each week I try to take time to sit with my calendar and ask God to help me plan my days. I need Him to show me His priorities and help me figure out what’s realistic for me to get done.

Now when I write out my schedule, I also leave room for any unexpected plans God might have for me. And if I can’t do everything I planned for one week, then the next week I plan less and ask God to help me again.

Asking God For The Impossible

Five years ago I listened as my sister told me she had rejected my religion. So I said, “Good thing I’m not into religion!”

Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. My sister shot back, “But you ARE religious.” And I simply said, “Nope.” Then I explained that I follow God not just a list of rules.

For years, I God chased me around with clear evidence of His presence. But I had to make the choice to see God. Hear God. Know God. Follow hard after God and read the Bible. Basically I learned to trade my doubts for an active faith.

That day I told my sister that I’d pray that God would mess with her in ways too bold for her to deny.

Fast forward over 5 years later; she called asking for those prayers. And that’s the miracle of Jesus. He’s the God of the impossible.

Not too long ago we went through this strange pattern of weather. One day it would be sunny, a little breezy, and gorgeous. The next day it would rain and thunderstorm all day. Then the next day would be beautiful again and the day after that…back to chilly and stormy.

It went on like that for more than a week, which made it hard to plan outside activities. But, I also noticed how much the weather affected my mood from day to day. On the days that were beautiful, sunny and warm, I had so much energy. And on those dark, cool, wet days… I could have slept all day if I had the chance.

The Impact Of A Teacher

I’m not sure if school teachers realize just how much they shape the lives they touch. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Recently my middle school daughter Ashley was happily cutting, taping, painting and turning a couple of 2 liter bottles into the shell of a rocket. Her hands had a steady confidence and her heart was full of wonder.

This is the same girl who pulled the covers over her head and told me she was done with school just a few short months ago. That was before Mrs. Lacado's class. When Ashley felt she couldn't, Mrs. Lacado assured her she could.

When Ashley had but a spark of success, Mrs. Lacado fanned it into a burning passion for learning. You know, I’d be so excited if God chose to use me today to be His voice of truth, compassion, and assurance, just like Mrs Lacado.

Variety is a good thing…right? Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries!

The other day my friend Jill and her family stopped at the drive thru and no one could decide what to order. She wanted grilled chicken, her husband wanted fried chicken, and her daughter wanted chicken strips.

So, they decided to order the VARIETY BUCKET and everybody got what they wanted!My friend started thinking about how much variety is available these days. It seems like nobody ever has to give up anything. But, is this GOOD? What about when we're teaching our kids that you don't always get what you want?

It’s not the restaurant’s fault…it's a human desire to get what we want when we want it. So, I have to pursue the path that offers less immediate gratification. God doesn't force it. He simply waits as I try Variety Bucket after Variety Bucket and eventually turn to the ONE THING that truly satisfies!

Healthy Eating

A few months ago I decided to give up sugar for a while. And all my girlfriends said, “What!” Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Whenever anyone hears about my new healthy eating plan, the first question they always ask is, “how?”

My answer? This isn’t just physical for me- it’s a spiritual journey. In my strength, no, I can’t do this or sustain this. But I’m not relying on my own strength. I’m praying and asking God moment by moment to teach me how to live in His strength. And I won’t lie, it can be very hard sometimes.

Each moment I have to make the choice to either live in my own strength and risk failure or grab hold of God. Because in his promises we find His strength. And the beautiful thing is, the more dependent we become on God, the less enamored we are with other choices.

Do you ever feel a bit of a let down after a vacation or Holiday Weekend?

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I don't know about you but I look so forward to having a little time off! And, then, before I know it, it's gone and I’m back to the regular stuff of life...scheduling appointments, going to the grocery store, filling up the gas tank, and cleaning the house - AGAIN!

Remember when we were kids? Those special times that gave us a break in our routine were HUGE and vacations were monumental! We hardly noticed the in between stuff.

Now, it seems like the in between stuff is all there is. So, I'm thankful for the little breaks even if they fly by too quickly! Otherwise I think life's to-do's would just overwhelm me!

Here's to the long weekends and Holidays that get us refreshed and ready to tackle the everyday! I hope you get a chance to take a break soon.

Abandon

I long to live a life that’s pleasing to Jesus. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Not a plastic Christian life full of religious checklists. No, that would be hypocritical at best and deadening at worst. But a life that points to Him.

I am fascinated by the imperfect heroes of faith in the Bible who, despite their shortcomings, pleased God. So much so, part of me wants to find the hallmarks of their journeys, create a checklist based on their lives and follow in step.

But God never called me to follow them. Because it wasn’t their perfect actions that please God, but their abandon.

Everything they had. Everything they hoped for. It was all His. And I desire to live that same way, in complete and utter abandon. No checklists. Just heart checks to make sure I am chasing only God.

Your Image Of God

I love taking pictures! I just don't always like seeing them afterwards! Hi, I'm Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Do you throw away or delete pictures that don't show your best side? One of the first things I do is pitch the ones that aren't very good. I'm especially quick to get rid of the ones where my eyes are half-closed or my mouth is crooked. And you can just forget about the ones where the camera adds 10 pounds.

These are not the images I want in my photo album or hanging on better accurate image. You know, I wonder if God ever looks at the way we picture Him and wishes we had a better image? The Bible says Jesus, God's Son, is the most accurate picture of God. So, if we get to know Jesus by reading the Bible and talking to Him in prayer, we'll start to see who God really is.

Goals

A friend recently asked me what my goals are for the next five years. To which I quickly replied, “I have no idea!” Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

God promises many times in the Bible that He has a plan for our lives. Since our lives are lived moment by moment, that must mean that He has a purpose for each of our minutes, each of our hours, and each of our days.

So when I stopped to think about this recently, I realized I was so focused rushing toward the future, I had stopped considering God’s purpose for right now. I stopped looking for God in this moment.

I’ve learned that my goals won’t bring me significance and self-worth. Now I’m not saying having a plan is wrong. But it should never take my focus off of God and His moment by moment intentions for me.

Help Me Get Back On Track!

I’m not so crazy about falling down, but I really HATE falling short!

Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

When I fall short of what God’s asking me to do or be I’m learning to ask for His help to get back on track. Then I try to do my best the next time.

I’ve realized that if I want to see progress, I’ve got to figure out what’s causing me to fail.

So, I’ve been trying to focus on just one area of my life like managing my time. Then I write down the things that make me fall short in that area – like being too busy or unorganized. And, I ask God to show me how to eliminate the things that are holding me back so I can move forward and see a change that area with His help.

I also ask God to show me the progress I’ve made and give myself grace when my best isn't as good as I want it to be.

Tears

Seven years ago I sat in my car and cried and told God I couldn't do what He was asking me to do. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.I'd just picked up the standardized test results for my newly adopted African sons. According to the test, they needed to be in kindergarten, but they were 13 and 14 years old. I was overwhelmed!

Now, seven short years later, Jackson, my oldest, not only graduated from high school, but he also received an Excelsior Award for various achievements.

After the awards ceremony, I sat in my car and cried again. Only this time, they were tears of absolute joy. I was so thankful that seven years ago I couldn't do what God was asking me to do. Because only He could. And that is indescribable.

A Lifetime Heart Warranty

We’ve had workers in our house doing repairs, and it's been so noisy!! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I've missed my privacy and being able to leave when I need to. But I've also been trying to be thankful since the work is being done at no cost to us through our home warranty.

The process is hard but we’d be crazy to pass up getting things repaired for free.

This morning I was thanking God for our home warranty and praying about some things that were bothering me. God reminded me of another warranty that offers the promise of free repairs. I have a lifetime heart-warranty from Him!

You know Jesus invites us to come to Him to repair whatever’s broken in our lives. We don't have to wait for a scheduled walk-through. We don't have to make a list and coordinate appointments or be at home for Him to do the work. We can come to Him moment by moment and tell Him what we need.

Honestly

I think we all get to a place sometime in our life where we have to honestly ask, "How am I doing?" Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. There are certain things about me I need to change but making excuses can be so appealing: I'm good in most areas. I make so many sacrifices already, and on and on.But excuses get me nowhere fast. This is especially true with my eating habits.

I suspect this same script of rationalization has played out in your mind too. I have to daily remind myself that I was made for more than compromise. We were made for God's promises in all areas of our life.

I’ve come to learn the hard way that nothing will change until I make the choice to change. Are you wanting to change something in your life? Take it from someone who finally laid down my excuses for God’s sure promises, it is possible.

Do The Next Thing

There are days when I feel completely overwhelmed!! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

When my brain gets bombarded by all things I need to get done, my friend Marybeth will remind me of something she learned from author, Elisabeth Elliot. After her husband died, Elisabeth said she would’ve given up if it weren’t for one simple concept – do the next thing.

When she began to get overwhelmed she’d simply ask herself what was the next thing that she needed to do - and then she’d do it. Then she’d do the next thing, and the next. And all those little "next things" made up her days.

So now, when I feel overwhelmed, I tell myself - "Just do the next thing."

Sometimes the next thing is to do a load of laundry. Or a grocery list. Or to get ready for work. Whatever it is, I focus on that one thing until it's done. And then I move on to do my next “next thing’!

Disappointment

Sometimes disappointment can actually be a gift! Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. Several weeks ago I was invited to speak at an event that was supposed to have nearly 5,000 people but- only 300 came.

That weekend I learned opportunity can be found in disappointment.

I met four amazing people that weekend. There was Petra my waitress, Tom the doorman, Jason the barista and a woman named Jenna whose car was damaged in a hit and run. Each of them had a story to tell, and because of the small crowd at the event, I had time to listen. If disappointment makes me think less of myself and more of others and God, than I choose to see it as a true gift. My prayer is that I’ll always remember to look on the fringe of my carefully planned days to recognize God’s unexpected appointments.

Time With Friends

I love to be with my family, but I also need time with my friends! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

It’s so easy for me to let my schedule get filled up, almost to the place where I don’t have time for my friends. Between work and laundry, groceries and kids, church activities and homework, I can go for weeks without any chance to have a little girl time. What about you? How often do you plan time to go to the movie with friends or meet for coffee?

Even if it’s just going for a walk or sitting on the porch and talking for 30 minutes, it’s important and I need it more than I realize! Jesus called Himself our friend.

He created us to have and be a good friend. So what can we do this week to make sure we get some much needed time to talk, laugh and share our life with our friends?

Brokenness For Protection

Our sweet dog Chelsea is not the brightest around cars. In fact, she just got hit for the second time. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Other than a broken front leg, and a severely scraped up back leg – Chelsea’s okay. The vet said that in order for her leg to properly heal, we’d have to keep her calm for three long weeks. Well, last night all that stillness got the best of her and she wanted out to run and chase some unsuspecting night creature. But her brokenness couldn't handle that kind of freedom yet. So, I couldn’t let her go.

You know, when I ask God for things and don't get them, I can find myself whining a little too. Ever been there? Well, I’ve learned that God's love for me won’t let me to do certain things to protect me and keep me from things my brokenness can’t handle. And for that, I’m thankful. Laundry Again?

It’s time to do the laundry again! And as soon as I wash, dry, and put away - our clothes hamper will be full…again. Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The thing about laundry is it’s never-ending! I've actually considered taking a sabbatical from doing the laundry. But I know it would just accumulate into a huge, mountain of smelly clothes.
You know, God has that constant washing thing going on too, except He's cleaning our hearts instead of our clothes. I bet He’d love it if we didn’t get our hearts dirty with things like lying, hatred and selfishness, But He knows we do and He’s always willing to clean us up!

I’m so glad God never gets overwhelmed when our heart hampers get full again! In fact, we can dump ten loads at His feet right now and He’ll wash it right away! And, He's a pro with the delicate cycle. If we can mess it up, He can clean it up ... we just have to ask.

Reality Discipline With Younger Children

Reality discipline for younger kids- is it possible? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries. While it has been a while since my kids were preschool age... I do remember holding on for dear life sometimes, exclaiming --- this too shall pass!

My reality discipline ideas during that phase seemed to be centered around privileges.

When my kids played with their toys correctly, and put them away when asked, they showed they were responsible enough to have a few extra minutes added to their bedtime. But if they were defiant, this showed me they needed extra which meant fewer privileges.

Whatever the consequence, I made sure it was tied to the action. Also, I tried to make sure that I thought of safe and reasonable consequences before my kids pushed my buttons. Otherwise, emotions pushed over the edge will often cause us to throw out threats that we won’t carry through.

Nobody's Perfect

Someone criticized me this week and it really hurt my feelings! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries. It also made me start doubting myself.When someone criticizes me as a mom, I doubt myself as a mom. When someone criticizes me as a friend, I doubt my ability to be a good friend. Ten people can say something nice but what I remember is that one person’s criticism.

I called my friend LeAnn for encouragement and with great wisdom she told me: "Renee, you’ll never be perfect. And if you ever get to where you are, you’ll be all alone!”

After we hung up, I prayed and asked God for His perspective, too. He reminded me that Jesus, the only perfect Person to walk this earth, was constantly criticized but He never doubted His calling. He depended only on His Father’s approval. Remembering this helped remove the sting of criticism and gave me hope. For more encouragement visit Proverbs31.org.

Reality Discipline

I must admit, yesterday I was getting very annoyed with one of my teenage daughters. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries. She was fiddling with our laptop computer in what appeared to be a very careless way. I kept saying, ‘please don’t tilt the screen back so far’. Patiently I said it again, and then again. Then I said it one more time with sharpness in my voice. I’m guessing you know the kind.

Thankfully my husband quickly stepped in when he saw my frustration beginning to mount. He rephrased what I had been trying to say. “It’s going to be a costly mistake for you if you break that computer sweetheart.” And that’s all it took. No more rough treatment of the laptop.

A Little Help From A Friend

Sometimes a friend makes all the difference! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Jill just ran her first 5-K and the first thing she said when it was over was, “WOW, I’m SLOW!” But, that was OK with her. She was just happy to finish the race. She never thought she’d run anything close to 3 miles!

Jill says there’s no way she would’ve made it without her husband and best friend, Jeremy, who ran right next to her the whole race. Every time she wanted to give up, Jeremy was right there reminding her that she COULD make it to the end. Then, at the last minute, he dropped back so Jill wouldn't be the last one to cross the finish line, he was! What a guy, huh?

Are You A Petal Picker?

You know, there seems to be a fundamental need inside all women to be liked. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

We want other women to totally get us and walk away thinking we’re pretty neat. It’s like we carry around a miniature scale. On one side we put our coolness and, on the other side, our total dorkiness.

Put a group of us in a space to mingle for a while and when we leave I guarantee many of us will walk away playing that daisy petal game in our heads: “She likes me … she likes me not.”

I’ve had to choose to mentally set those thoughts aside. I’ve had to retrain my brain so God’s truths interrupt my negative thought patterns. I’ll look up and say, “God, You not only like me, You love me … and that’s enough.”

Is That All He Thinks About?

Sometimes husbands and wives are on opposite wavelengths when it comes to spending time together. Hi, I'm Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The wife will want to go for a walk, sit and talk over coffee and just be together. The husband usually has other things in mind. A friend was telling me recently that she wishes her husband wasn’t so focused on the physical aspect of their relationship. She wishes he were more concerned with her emotional needs.

In her book, Is That All He Thinks About?, author Marla Taviano encourages wives to recognize that God designed men and women differently on purpose--so we'll complement each other, balance each other, and be strong where the other is weak.

I’ve been feeling like God wants me to look for ways to embrace those differences instead of wishing we were more alike. The Red Flags In Dating

A group of teenage girls were recently asked if they would date a boy simply because he was good looking. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Most said yes, they would date someone on good looks alone. My friend who was asking the question asked another, ‘But what do you know about him?” The silence made her point.

She then talked with the girls about 5 red flags to look for before entering a dating or courting relationship with a guy.

Does he lose his temper frequently? Does he consider himself a failure and seem to be looking for a rescuer? Has there been abuse in his home? Does he often put you down or disrespect you? And, does he appear to be jealous, controlling, or need to spend all his free time with you?

Have you ever felt broken and useless? Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

My friend Tracie was cleaning out a cluttered kitchen cabinet, when she found an old broken can opener. She handed it to her nine year-old so he could throw it away. But he asked if he could keep it.

Tracie wondered why he’d want an old, dirty, useless can opener. But he begged her to let him keep it! Finally she said:

"Honey, it’s broken, I don't want it anymore, so throw it away please."

"Well if I was broken, would you just throw me away?" her son asked.Tracie bent down and looked into her child’s eyes and told him that she would never throw him away, no matter what, because he was too valuable to her!

Forgotten

Have you ever felt forgotten? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

That’s how my daughter, Brooke, felt after an innocent mistake someone made during dress rehearsal for her school play. She was left backstage feeling like she didn’t matter.

To comfort her, I bent down to hug her tight and reminded her of something important. You see, I was supposed to be at an event out of town that very weekend. Then at the last minute my event was cancelled.

So, I said to her "Sweetheart, God arranged everything PERFECTLY to make sure I could be here this weekend. I don't think He'd do that if your part didn't matter. Yes, you were left out today. But you’re not forgotten. Not today. Not ever."

We've all probably had thoughts that we don't matter, that we aren’t important. It’s good to remember that, just like Brooke, we are NEVER forgotten!

Uniquely You

In case you’ve ever wondered, you are uniquely you for a reason! Hi I’m Renee Swope with Proverbs 31 Ministries.

God created each of us with a unique personality. But, as different as we all can be it’s also good to know there are others who have similar personality types. In her book, Personality Plus, Florence Littauer describes four common personalities.

A Phlegmatic person wants PEACE, reduced stress, and a feeling of worth. If someone’s Choleric, they desire CONTROL and appreciation for their achievements. A Sanguine person wants to have FUN and likes attention and approval. And, someone who’s Melancholy desires PERFECTION and needs stability and space.

The Little Red Flag

When was the last time you received an actual hand written letter from a friend? Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

The other day my neighbor Holly and I met up for our usual morning run. As we chatted my eyes followed the long line of black mailboxes along the street. I couldn’t help but notice that not one red flag was up. No one was sending a letter that day. Or the next day, or the next.

So, I dusted off my own stack of good intentions, wrote a letter and mailed it. And I decided to make letter writing part of the time I spend alone with God each day. Now, I try to write a letter once or twice a week. And since I've told God I'm willing, He's been putting people on my heart that need one. Do you ever get tired of working 168 hours a week as a mom with no pay or vacation? Hi, I'm Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

If you’re a mom, you know there’s not much glamour in motherhood. Not much recognition or validation. No paychecks, no promotions, no pats on the back from co-workers. And when you're up to your elbows in dishes and diapers, it's easy to lose sight of your purpose in life.

Have you ever wondered if what you do even matters?

In her book, Changing Your World One Diaper at a Time, Marla Taviano encourages moms to see their job as valuable and rewarding. She even suggests using diaper-changing times as quick prayer opportunities, asking God to help us savor each moment we've been given with our children.

Embracing Who I Am

Ten years ago I sat in a seminar listening to a very organized mom talk about parenting her kids. Hi, I’m Lysa TerKeurst for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I decided I stunk as a mother and begged God to make me just like this woman who I thought was Super Mom!

I continued to feel this way until one day when I read the story of Mary, the teenaged mother of Jesus, and something stuck out to me. Just as she was, God chose this girl to be Jesus’ mother. And the only qualification she seemed to have was her willingness.

I was spending so much time comparing myself to others when all I really needed to do was give God my willingness to be a mother.

If you’ve ever struggled with a desire to be the perfect mom, employee, or volunteer, you know what I’m talking about. Maybe it’s time that we stop unfairly comparing ourselves to others, realize our own great qualities and just be fully ourselves.
